Rumblings about the HCG Weight Loss Protocol?
You may have read about the HCG Weight Loss Protocol in a fashion magazine or a person’s blog or video chronicling their journey. It became a household name this year after Dr. Mehmet Oz, host of The Dr. Oz Show, changed his mind, from con to pro, in his February 2013 show, after new research convinced him that the HCG Weight Loss Protocol is a credible solution with incredible results. “We ought to be doing some big studies looking at HCG, because if you can give this as an injection and help people lose a lot of weight quickly and help people reset where they are in life, you give them a running start at a much healthier existence,” commented Dr. Oz during the show.
*NOTE* The only reliable and effective HCG hormone comes in the form of an injectable prescription drug that must be prescribed by a doctor.
What is the HCG Weight Loss Protocol?
HCG — which stands for “human chorionic gonadotropin.” HCG is a hormone produced in pregnant women that uses fat cells to the nourish the body when they are unable to get enough calories. HCG is a natural, protein hormone, that acts as a pro-hormone which helps the body make more hormones (progesterone, testosterone, progesterone, thyroid hormones, etc.,). Since hormone deficiency or imbalance is usually part of the reason for weight gain, whether it’s your thyroid, or menopause (or andropause), the HCG protein hormone will help counteract these issues. It has been found that HCG, when used as a weight loss protocol, triggers the body into stimulating hormones in very low levels that help the body preserve lean muscle mass while dieting.
How is this different from normal diets?
Simply put, HCG changes how you lose weight. Normally, when a person diets and exercises to lose weight, the body loses the weight in the reverse order that they put the weight on. So, for example, a person who stores weight mostly in the abdomen, will loose weight everywhere else first (when dieting without HCG) and, quite often, never be able to loose it in that stubborn abdominal area—sometimes no matter how much they try. HCG is very different because it does the exact opposite. HCG attacks the stubborn fat cells in those areas we would all like to loose from FIRST, and because it preserves muscle mass, will help sculpt the body back to its normal state. There are many who have successfully mastered the protocol that say the weight loss achieved from the use of HCG compares to lap band or gastic bypass—without the surgery.
What’s the catch?
The catch is that you have to be disciplined. You have to really want to lose the weight and follow the food regimen completely. What kind of food? We’re talking about eating only fresh non-processed foods that everyone grew up eating 50 years ago—lean meats, fruits and vegetables. The things we all should be eating anyway. And, with the protocol, there is no sugar, dairy, or fat. It is imperative to take daily action to prepare the foods that enable the protocol to do its work. It’s the diet that helps you lose the weight while the HCG changes how you lose it—losing fat first from the most stubborn areas. However, when you step on the scale each morning and lose 1/2 to 1 lb-a-day (on average) for women, and 1 to 2 lbs-a-day (on average) for men, its more than motivating to eat healthy. And, my patients have all found that they feel so much better once they are eating real food and see the benefits of weight loss—lower cholesterol, lower diabetes risk etc. The protocol doesn’t work if you don’t follow the food regimen. So, you have to be mentally prepared to follow though or this protocol isn’t right for you.
Does HCG really preserves muscle mass?
YES! HCG injections keep you from losing muscle while you lose weight by elevating hormone levels in the body—in particular testosterone. Women should not become alarmed by the word testosterone. Women need a balance of the hormone testosterone just as much as men (just not in as high of levels). Testosterone helps create lean muscle mass. And, lean muscle mass bumps up our metabolism to burn more fat throughout the day. In fact, the more lean muscle mass we possess, the more our bodies keep burning fat—even when we’re sitting down! The HCG hormone creates an anabolic state (muscle-building) which counteracts the catabolic state (muscle-breakdown). There are hormone receptors on muscle fibers that respond to the increased hormone levels in patients taking the HCG hormone. This is one of the biggest differentiations between the HCG protocol and other weight-loss products. It is also the ONLY reason that you could ever be on a very low caloric diet in a safe
and effective manner. Anytime muscle is lost from the body frame, it hurts metabolism and puts someone at risk for regaining weight. My patients have not regained the weight when they go off the protocol once they raise the calories to a normal range when they continue to eat in a healthy manner.
Is it true that you don’t feel hungry on the HCG Protocol?
All of my patients have reported that when on the correct dosage they don’t feel hungry on the HCG Weight Loss Protocol. Though, it does require some adjustments of the proper dosage to get just the right amount for each individual person. Again, this is dependent on the level of exercise, current hormone levels in the body, gender, ect., and also why you need to be overseen by a doctor throughout the process. Anything out there on the internet is not true HCG or its in such small doses that it won’t presserve muscle and you will be starving your body. HCG stimulates leptin (a protein hormone that’s made in the fat cells) to a level that your need for food is less than without the HCG. Inside the brain there are enzymes that when they are activated make you hungry—a true urgency to eat. Enzymes in the brain become activated when Leptin levels are high. When Leptin levels are down in the brain the enzymes that make you hungry turn off. Leptin regulates our hunger. HCG stimulates leptin, circulates in the bloodstream, and goes to the brain. Leptin is the way fat cells tell the brain that your energy thermostat is set right.
Does that have anything to do with why some people eat whatever they want and never gain weight while others gain it by just looking at food?
Yes. This can be a contributing factor. Food stimulates the hormone leptin. To explain it simply: thin people (less fat, less leptin) have less leptin than heavier people (more fat, more leptin). So, both people can eat down to eat the exact plate of food. The heavier person gets more leptin resulting in a release of fuel and they gain fat eating from the exact same food as the thin person. The thin person is still hungry and can eat three times as much food and doesn’t gain any weight. But the heavier person will gain with less food. The more fat you gain the less fat you need. Once you get the larger fat cells that releases more leptin in your body the less food you need—but you are always hungry. Its a very vicious cycle. Very low levels of HCG elevates Leptin levels in your body and this is a powerful thing.
I heard the HCG Weight Loss Protocol has severe calorie restrictions. Isn’t that bad for you?
Previously, the HCG Diet was defined by a 500-calorie diet paired with daily injections of HCG. And, when doctors and people hear 500-calories-a-day, they all scream, “but you will be starving your body with that low of calories.” And, traditionally, that would be true. However, the HCG hormone nourishes your body. HCG does something that most people don’t understand. HCG releases approximately 3,000 calories a day from those stubborn stored fat deposits into your body. You don’t need a very high calorie diet, because in essence, you will be getting plenty of calories already stored in your body being released. Also, my HCG weight loss protocol customizes the calorie count for each individual dependent on many personal factors—level of exercise and individual needs. Calories can range anywhere from 600 to 1500 depending on these things.
I thought you couldn’t exercise while on HCG?
The original protocol created by Dr. ATW Simeons did not allow exercise. However, that was in the 1950’s and many things have evolved and changed since that time. If you are already a person who exercises, I whole-heartedly encourage you to continue. However, you will notice that you will have to scale back on the intensity of your workouts while on the protocol. And, if you haven’t been regularly exercising, many of my patients have found that the most effective exercise with the HCG is simply walking. Walking every day, eating the right foods and taking the daily injections are a recipe for success with this protocol.
Does the Internal Medicine HCG Weight Loss Protocol follow Dr. Simeons Protocol?
My changes to the Simeons Protocol (based on years of working with patients successfully completing the protocol) is customizing the amount of calories a person uses based on their health, hormone levels, exercise level, and medical conditions. I encourage exercise, in particular, daily walking. And, I ask my patients to familiarize themselves with the original literature and read recommended updated books to find a stricter framework to start the protocol with so that as they progress they can document from week to week what works for them. Some things work for some people on the protocol that don’t work for other people. You have to do some trial and error with the foods and see what works for you. What do you as a physician like most about the HCG Weight Loss Protocol?
What I like most is that you get real results quickly while learning to follow a healthy diet. And, for the time that you commit to the protocol, whether 1, 2, or 3 months, it forces you to make good food choices (lean meats, vegetables, and fruit) that will become a long-lasting healthy habit. Because, when you consistently eat in this manner, you are going to feel great and realize how much our heavily processed/GMO-ladden/hormone injected foods make you feel terrible. And, so learning to eat fresh, vibrant, and live food is the key to your success on this protocol that will ultimately change how you look at food forever. This is a very positive part of the process and it will reap more rewards than just your weight-loss. You will have more energy and other medical conditions that come with too much weight will drop off right along with the weight loss. And, the components of the protocol are pillars to put into practice for the rest of your life.
